Medical assistants support the organised delivery of care through patient communication, administrative processes and supervised clinical-support responsibilities appropriate to the workplace.
ATTI’s published beginner Medical Assistant Professional Programme is five months: four months of guided theory and a weekly instructor-led class alternating theory and practical work, followed by a month of supervised clinical placement/work experience. The exact duties of a medical assistant vary by employer and local requirements. Training should build dependable fundamentals while helping learners understand professional boundaries and when to escalate to clinical staff.

A patient-service scenario to practise
Illustrative classroom exercise: a patient arrives worried because their appointment details do not match the schedule.
- Greet the patient respectfully and use the workplace’s approved identity-check process.
- Check the scheduling record without exposing other patients’ information.
- Explain what you can verify and refer unresolved questions to the responsible colleague.
- Record the administrative issue accurately using the workplace process.
- If the patient reports a clinical concern, seek clinical assistance instead of attempting a diagnosis.
Strong support work combines accuracy, privacy and knowing when to escalate. This example is not a clinical procedure.
Separate the occupation from the qualification
A medical assistant is a healthcare-support role; the duties permitted in a particular workplace depend on local requirements, employer policy, training and supervision. Prepare for guided study between classes
A weekly class still requires preparation. Read the assigned Moodle material, list questions you cannot answer and review feedback after class. Bring those questions to the next instructor-led session. Beginners should not treat a video or written lesson as permission to perform a clinical skill without supervision.
Ask specific questions about placement
Before enrolment, ask how placements are organised, what attendance is expected, how supervisors assess progress and what happens if a placement is delayed. Obtain the current arrangements directly from Admissions instead of assuming a particular clinic or hospital is guaranteed.
